Q: Free legal advice regarding family law

single mother, 2 children with a man that i was never married to. He is trying to get child support from me even though i have supported him for the last year and a half and time with the kids has been split evenly. I have also been buying everything for the children aside from food, which he gets food assistance. I would like to try and get custody but i am not sure what my rights are and what the best option for me and my children are.

A: If you are not married to him, he has no rights until he establishes paternity and a court grants him parenting rights. With no court order for visitation or parenting in place, you are the sole legal custodian of your children, and you do not have to allow him any access to the children at all, and you can apply for him to pay you child support, which is calculated according to a worksheet in Ohio. Use the Find a Lawyer tab to retain a local family law attorney who can review the facts of your situation and advise you. Some courts have family law legal clinics to provide answers and assist people.
