Asked in Employment Law for New York

Q: I hold the title of School Secretary (NYS). The school I was assigned to was for the position of School Secretary.

The school is to become a grow up school keg through 8th grade making the job title Senior School Secretary due to having 7th and 8th grade students. I was told by my union (BENTE) president that once I leave or retire the position would changed to a senior School Secretary. Once the school reached up to the 8th grade, The principal, decided to place me on provisional position as senior school secretary. After. One year, in the provisional position, the princicipal decided she wanted someone else to work as the secretary at the school, and had me demoted back to school secretary, removed from the school and pay scale reduced back down 10%.

My question: Because I was already in the title of School Secretary and did not leave the school on my own, can I be forced to accept the change of going back to an elementary school, and not staying at my current location?

A: You should ask your union that question.

Assuming you are not happy with the position change and reduced pay you should apply for other jobs immediately.

It's always better to be employed when you land another job.

Have you asked the principal whether there are skills which you could improve? We all have to learn new things constantly. Those skill enhancements may help you land another job. Good luck!
