Stanton, CA asked in Immigration Law for California

Q: Do I become a US citizen if my dad is a US citizen?

My father applied for citizenship in 1999 when I was 17 years old. His application processed and he became a citizen was sworn in on 01/25/2000 and I turn 18th on 01/15/2000. My question is since my name was on the application and he became a citizen do I automatically becomes a citizen even though I turned 18th 10 days before he sworn in? Please advise. Thanks

A: Short answer is no. Your father should have submitted your application at the same time. You should talk to a good immigration attorney.

A: You were over the age of 18 when your father became a citizen, so you didn’t automatically become one.
