Asked in Criminal Law for Florida

Q: If a US citizen assisted with a murder in Thailand 2001, could they still be charged in America after confessing to it?

The murderer pleaded guilty to the crime in Thailand and died in prison. The person who assisted the crime went back to America but confessed to state police in Florida months later. Under American law would we be able to sentence them? If so, What would the likely punishment be?

A: Normally, the murder would have to be committed in Florida to be a crime under the laws of that state. If it was committed in Thailand, it would probably be a crime there, not her.

A: You should discuss this with a criminal lawyer in Thailand. The courts there would most likely have jurisdiction and an attorney would be able to inform you of the steps Thai Police could take to get this person extradited from the USA to Thailand to face trial there for the murder. Good luck.
