Willard, OH asked in Animal / Dog Law and Car Accidents for Ohio

Q: My dog ran away and someone claims to have hit her. Is it my responsibility to pay

My dog ran away late New Year's Eve. I posted about it on Facebook, searching for her. I was contacted 3 days later via text by a woman who claims she may have hit her, now a week later, she's coming after me to pay for the deductible, can I fight this? There is no proof the accident even happened, let alone proof it was my dog she hit. The dog is home now, a couple scrapes but nothing that indicates a car has hit her. There is no police report or witnesses either.

A: You should report her claim to your homeowners insurance. Did she pay the vet bill? Generally, you are responsible in most states for your animal's actions. If you let them loose, then you may be responsible.
