Warren, MI asked in Family Law for Michigan

Q: Can a father be forced to administer Doctor prescribed medication to the child when she is visiting with him?

Mom and Dad were never married and had a child together. They live separately now and the child visits her father every weekend. They share custody but the child resides with the mother and the dad pays Child support. The Father does not believe in vaccinations or giving any type of prescribed medication. His description of medicines prescribed or over the counter is that they are all poison and he will not give them to his child.

So, recently the child, who is 7 years of age became ill with an ear infection and pink eye in both eyes. The child was seen by the doctor and was prescribed eye drops for the eyes and Ammoxicillan for the ear infection. Mom does not want to send the child to her Dads because he has stated that he will not give her the medication. She is willing to send her but wants assurances that the child will get her meds. Can he be "Ordered" to give her the meds and does the mom have to send her knowing she will not get her medications

A: If the medication is properly prescribed, the father must comply. If he doesn't, mom can file a motion with the court.
