Q: What does this mean?

I got a letter saying the defendant has failed to file answer or plead within the time prescribed by law and appearing from the affidavit filed in support of the plaintiffs motion that the defendant is not in the military service of the US

A: I presume you are the defend it. It means the defendant has failed to respond to the lawsuit filed by following any paper. This means that a default has been entered against the defendant. You can read about what a default is by googling you on the Internet. Essentially but if I do as was the case by ignoring the complaint and summons served upon the defendant
