Passaic, NJ asked in Landlord - Tenant for New Jersey

Q: What are my rights in NJ as a tenant after a new owner takes over?

New owners took over the house I live in back in November. I lived thru my original lease thru the end of january. The new landlord renewed my lease for February. My 8 yr old daughter and I were supposed to move to Nevada, however it is not possible right now and we decided to wait until she finishes the school year. On Jan 30th, I asked the landlord thru text if she can renew my lease for another month. She replied and said no. Today, Feb 13th, I asked once again since I am having a hard time finding another rental willing to lease month to month until june. She replied and said no because they purchased the home with the intent of living on the 1st floor. I have not received a written letter stating that the lease will not be renewed. Is that required? Also, what are my rights here? What can I do?

A: Everything varies from town to town I would suggest a consultation with an experienced lawyer, it may cost you a few bucks but at least you will get the answers you need.
