Baker, LA asked in Family Law for Louisiana

Q: I’ve been raising my son for 11 years by myself,do to his dad leaving while I was 5 mths pregnant.

Over the years he’s gathered a pretty long criminal record. He just recently met our child 9 months ago for the first time.At that time child support had been looking for him for the 5+ years do to him bouncing back and forth from Texas to Mississippi. He finally started cooperating with child support and a court order was in place.Since the judgement he has not provided the court ordered health insurance for our son.I decided to reopen our child support case due to him not providing his part of financial support as well. He drives trucks over the road and is home maybe 5 days out the month. He lives in Mississippi now and we reside Louisiana he recently told me if I reopen my case he would get a lawyer and go for custody to avoid paying. He feels since he makes more money then me he’s automatically gonna get custody. Is there anything I can do to stop him for trying to take our son who he ran from for the pass 11 years?

A: Hire a custody lawyer if you are served with something.
