Q: if a mechanic brakes a part during the repair, who has to pay for it to be fixed

A: It depends on the situation. If a mechanic clearly makes an error and breaks a sound part, the shop could be seen as liable, depending on factors such as the instructions of the owner and any warnings the owner was given. If an exhaust pipe and muffler are rusted to the point of crumbling under a mechanic's touch, people would be unlikely to see that as a mechanic's fault.
