Columbus, OH asked in Landlord - Tenant for Ohio

Q: The apartment complex where I live raised my rent 75.00 six months after I signed my yearly lease, are they allowed to?

Never actually received the paper but did receive a bill for $200+. When I called to find out, no one would answer my call or emails. 2 months later received another bill for 397.00. And was finally told about the rent increase. I thought I had to sign a new lease when the rent increased?

A: If you signed a one-year lease with the rent amount set for the full year, with no mention of automatic or other increases in rent, then landlord has no legal basis to demand that payment. But if you don't pay, landlord could try to sue or evict you, or make an adverse entry on your credit record. Use the Find a Lawyer tab to retain a local attorney to review the lease and communicate with landlord on your behalf.
