Knoxville, TN asked in Civil Litigation for Tennessee

Q: Can a mechanic sue me or stick me with a bill because we referred someone to them, and the customer didn't pay?

In the middle of the night my girlfriend received a call from a lady that she's known for at least 10 years. Her car had broke down off an exit about 35 minutes from our house. We suggested she take her car to someone local and it was towed to this guys home based shop. He diagnosed her vehicle as needing an engine, and she decided the cost to replace it exceeded the value of the vehicle. He quoted $120 for his time to diagnose it, and told her she could get $300-400 for her vehicle for scrap. He convinced her to just send him the title, that's what he wanted. She told him she'd get the title and send it. It's now been 45 days, and he hasn't received the title, so he's threatening me because he has my contact number, and telling me he's going to sue all parties involved and charge storage etc. I believe he knows my business name, and full name. It's not my car.. I put them in communication together as a favor for my girlfriend. Now I've got all this drama. Do I even worry with it?

A: People often make threats that they don't intend to carry out in an effort to force payment. If you did not authorize the work, you are not liable for the bill. if he calls again, just make that very clear- he should pursue the car's owner for his bill.
