Chino Hills, CA asked in Personal Injury and Animal / Dog Law for California

Q: I'm being sued and counter sued for my Exs dog which had bite a woman.

She claims I was there I was not, the dog was determined my exs in a court of law. I need to know what kind of a lawyer I need for this I'm having trouble with the legal terms involved. I also need any advice on a lawyer that will take my case pro bono or at least on small payments... this is so confusing to me it makes my head pound and then I don't want to do anything about it now I have less then 30 days or I wont even be able to defend myself in court. The dog bite didn't happen where we were living it actually happened in Corona at a place with multiple businesses, the lady who got bite by the dog was leaving work, and my Exs friend and his girl friend were at the location he was picking up his check I guess.

A: Notify your homeowner's insurance, or renter's insurance, and/or your ex's homeowner's insurance. If none of these exist, you will have to pay for an attorney, or file for bankruptcy. No one is going to want to work for free.

A: If you had homeowner's or renter's insurance at the time of the incident, turn this over to the insurance company right away. They will provide you with a lawyer and defend you. If you did not have insurance, and can not afford an attorney, try legal aid in your county, or your county bar association lawyer referral service. Ask the referral service about their "low fee" or "no fee" panels. Be sure not to miss the deadline to file a response. You may also need to consider bankruptcy, so you may want to consult with a bankruptcy attorney.

A: more info needed.

if either of you had homeowner's insurance it should be submitted to them.

if not you might have exposure for the bite/injury if they can prove your ownership.........your ex likewise has financial exposure.
