San Antonio, TX asked in Animal / Dog Law for Ohio

Q: Can I gain ownership again of a dog I re-homed if I have proof of her being mistreated in some way?

So I had to re-home my doberman Anubis because we were moving away to an apartment due to my husband's job in Cincinnati and dogs weren't allowed so I decided to re-home her and even as months passed I never once forgot about her and I cry sometimes because me and the kids miss her so much and I still talk to the new owner but she complains so much about her saying that she's had enough and that she is a nightmare and that she has to shut her up and other horrible things and accuses me and my kids of abusing her when me and my kids had her she was so happy and I even have video footage of it and now I just see Anubis so sad and actually losing weight but yet she blames it on us when I think the real reason is because she misses us especially the kids because she was used to playing with them everyday and now we actually have our own place but she won't give her back just because she doesn't want to yet complains about her.

A: You can call and make a complaint to the local animal control agency. They should investigate the situation. You can also offer to buy her back. If the person is as fed up as she claims, she might be willing to sell her back.

If you adopt another dog out, next time include a contract and a "clawback" provision.
