Q: Can you file criminal charges on someone falsely accuse you of drug dependence ?

A: Ordinarily, such an accusation would be considered a civil wrong. If verbal, it is slander. If it is in writing, it is libel. You could consult with an attorney who handles defamation cases, but keep in mind that such civil tort cases are not necessarily handled on a contingency basis the way negligence-based tort cases are. That means you could pay hourly fees for investigations, depositions, or other processes to establish what the other party said and to try to quantify damages... without being certain of the outcome. First find out if an attorney would offer you a free consult and ask if the matter would be viable and cost-effective to pursue. Good luck

A: I'm sorry; a minute ago, I said, "such "civil" tort cases are not handled... " I should have said, "such "intentional" tort cases." They're all civil torts. I apologize for using the imprecise term.
