Sanford, NC asked in Family Law for North Carolina

Q: Is this legal?

I live in the state of Nc. I was with my ex for 2.5 years. Never married. We adopted a dog together but the paperwork is in his name only. When I left the house (almost 30 days ago) he said in front of two police officers that I was allowed to take the dog with me. He is now emailing me that I have 3 days to return her. In the 30 days he told me that he would surrender her legally to me. Once the rescue sent the paperwork to him he never responded. I have recordings and texts saying I get first "dibs" on her first then she would go to him. I know it is a felony to keep her. But, do I have a legal leg to stand on to fight to get her back?

A: Maybe you have a case but why bother? Just give up the dog, go adopt a new one and move on. Otherwise, you are likely just playing into his plan to screw with you over a dog.
