Athens, GA asked in Family Law for Georgia

Q: Can we leave our 15 year old with his sister for a week while we are out of the country. She will just have turned 18.

The grandparents have been contentious because they don't agree with my remarriage and move after their son died. I don't trust them but we would like to have our daughter practice responsibility and there are lots of great adult friends nearby. I am afraid with this and his normal high school boy bad grades they will sue for custody or call for neglect.

A: Putting the law aside, this doesn't sound like a good idea at all. Period. Get a babysitter.

A: I agree with my colleague, this may not be the best arrangement. Perhaps the grandparents could stay with the teen or the teen could stay with the grandparent while you are out of the country. This will give them time to visit and will help avoid any trouble. -Homer P. Jordan IV, Esq. 404-620-1558

A: I agree with my colleagues, however it is important for you to know that you have full discretion in this matter as a parent. There is nothing illegal about what you are proposing.

I wish you well.
