Riverside, CA asked in Animal / Dog Law and Personal Injury for California

Q: my 2 service dogs and i were staying at an airbnb in California. they both got out of the yard and were picked up by

a citizen and taken to the shelter, I did not find out they were there until they had both been adopted, I have a prescription from my psych and family doctor stating that i can not be without them. CAN I GET THEM BACK FROM THE NEW OWNER? I will reimburse them for any out of pocket costs they paid

A: Someone would have to get many more facts from you to determine if you could force them to return the dogs. Instead you should contact the new owner (if you know who they are) and tell them your story and offer them the money you otherwise would have put into a legal remedy. If you don't know who the new owners are you would have to take some action to find out and it might end up being too cost prohibitive.

A: much more info needed.

how much time passed?

have you tried to contact the new owner? that would be your best bet.

it might be costly to hire a lawyer to file in superior court but going to small claims, if necessary, won't cost much and you would get to court quickly.
