Salinas, CA asked in Animal / Dog Law for California

Q: Can I get my dog back?

Two weeks ago my dog got lost. Recently my dad found my dog but a man was walking him. He approached the man and told him the dog was his. The man stated a homeless person sold him the dog. My dog did not have a chip and so they implanted one on him. Now they claim the dog is theirs. We have registration papers, lisence papers, and vaccine papers claiming the dog is ours. He is under my dad's name. They never took my dog to the shelter to see if the owner, us, would pick him um. Now they want 500 dollars for him. My family thinks they didn't buy the dog from a homeless person because they live right behind where my dog got lost. Can I get him back?
