Q: Found puppy with no tags while at work. Took home. No owners found. Can lose job if claimed after given away?

Boyfriend found a puppy while at work with no collar, no tags, and loaded him up in his work truck and brought him home! We have had him in our possession for 7 full days. We have looked for owners in neighborhood the puppy was found, looked for lost posters/signs as well as waited for someone to call or come to his work looking for him since he was picked up in a work truck! It’s been 7 days and we have not had any luck! We cannot keep him due to rules of our apartment complex and we have found him a loving home to go to! Boyfriend is worried he will lose his job if it’s a costumers dog and they come to claim the dog at any point and we have given the dog away and they claim he “stole” the dog. Is this true?! And must the owners have proof (vet records, etc.) that it’s was theirs to begin with to claim the dog after any period of time?! And once the pup is given to his new family, does that family have to give him up if previous owner comes to claim the dog?!
