Roseville, CA asked in Employment Discrimination and Employment Law for California

Q: Can a employer block you from applying to a different department/growth opportunity?

The lead in the other department was welcome to have me apply and I had an interview set up. One condition was to inform my current manger I was applying. I let him know, and he said it was inappropriate for me to apply for another position after 6 weeks of employment weather it is stated in the contract or not and was told I am not allowed to apply.

A: Unless there is some union provision controlling the situation, there is nothing unlawful about what your boss is doing unless you can prove you are being denied the opportunity because of your membership in a protected class of people or because you engaged in some form of legally protected conduct.

Good luck to you.
