Asked in Landlord - Tenant for Florida

Q: I signed a lease from 4/12/19 - 4/12/20. I vacated on 3/31/20. I’m still paying rent for April. She wants to charge $2k?

I signed a lease agreement from 04/12/19 - 04/12/20 in Gainesville, FL. I’m a medical professional, and was recruited to work with COVID19 patients out of state. On 03/17/20 I emailed my landlord to determine April’s rent (all other months were paid in full & on time) and was told because I’m vacating early (03/31/20) I can be charged $1,498 for a contract buyout + $749 for insufficient notice. I only asked what my prorated April rent would be, and mentioned my move-out date in passing. I do not want to buyout the contract. Can they charge this if I am still paying rent to the end of the lease? I cannot find anything in the lease that specifies that I must move out on the last day of the contract, only that rent is due through April 12th 2020. I can provide more details if necessary. Thank you! I would also like to write a bad review about this experience on google. I have screenshots of our emails. Is this advisable? Thanks again!

A: Stop arguing with your landlord and calculate the pro-rated rent for April. Simply divide the current monthly rent by 30 days and then multiply that daily rate by 12, to get the correct amount due for the last 12 days of your rent owed. Then send that amount to the landlord and tell them in writing that you are vacating on the 12th of April.
