A: There are a number of different types of motions you'll see both in New York Practice and Federal Practice. If you look them up, you'll see motion to dismiss, motion to compel, discovery motions, jnov, and a few others. Summary judgment basically asks the court to rule that there is no dispute as to any material fact and that movant is entitled to judgment as a matter of law. See Federal Rule 56 - A party may move for summary judgment, identifying each claim or defense, or the part of each claim or defense, on which summary judgment is sought. The court shall grant summary judgment if the movant shows that there is no genuine dispute as to any material fact and the movant is entitled to judgment as a matter of law. The court should state on the record the reasons for granting or denying the motion. Also see NY CPLR 3212. Good luck
