Asked in Criminal Law and Family Law for Kentucky

Q: In Kentucky, is a DVO considered a charge or conviction? Does it prohibit firearms, for me I am in the military

I am in the military and have an epo against me. The dvo hearing is soon and Im wondering if it is a charge or conviction? Or only if I breach the DVO? Can a dvo be issued and not have firearm provisions? Is there another option so I can keep my job? I have 12 years in and dont want to throw it all away

A: A dvo is not a criminal charge or conviction, although violation of a dvo is a criminal charge. The dvo is civil in nature but if entered against you, you will not be able to possess a firearm.
