San Angelo, TX asked in Estate Planning and Probate for Texas

Q: My husbands dad died. My sister in law has informed him that a life insurance company has been looking for him.

We live in San Angelo, Texas and his dad lived in Trenton New Jersey. He past away almost 7 years ago and he was a retired U.S. Postal worker and retired from the Air Force He called his stepmother and she said she didn’t remember any of that information because that was almost 7 years ago. He called his sister (that does not have the same dad) to see if she got a name, a company name, a phone number anything from when the people called her looking for him and she said she did not and has erased the phone call from her phone so she does not have that number anymore. He is wanting to know how to go about finding out any information he can on who it is that is looking for him and what it is that they are looking for him for. He does not know his dads social security number and does not remember his dads birthday. He has only one brother on his dads side and he does not respond to any phone calls or emails. He also is from New Jersey.

A: If the insurance company is unable to find you, eventually they will escheat your insurance proceeds to the State. Probably the State of New Jersey. Every once in a while, go online with the New Jersey Secretary unclaimed property administration here:

https://www.unclaimedproperty.nj.gov/

and with the Texas Comptroller here:

And check to see if your name is listed.
