A: If an innocent person is facing criminal charges then you should speak up. If there was a fight but the person charged with a crime was using force in self-defense, in defense of another, or in defense of property then you should speak up. Intentionally misleading the investigating officers is a crime, but it is a lower level offense than lying under oath in a trial. Sometimes officers get the wrong idea without being intentionally misled.

A deliberate lie on the application form for victim compensation through the AG's office could be a significant problem so if that happened you should have a private consultation with a local criminal defense attorney before making any moves.
