Baltimore, MD asked in Child Support and Family Law for New York

Q: Will my ex have to pay child support for my 19 year old daughter. We live in pa and pa court said they go by NY rules.

I have two daughters with my ex one is 19 I was told they go by NY guide lines does that mean he will pay child support for my 19 year old daughter if I file? I never received child support except threw a restraining order when my oldest was 3 years old, but only for a few months. It never went threw the system. The judge just asked if I wanted child support. My ex also has a business and is going to lie about how much he makes. So I’m worried about that as well. He has always made good money and only helps when he wants too. He paid for my daughters private school last year that is 300 dollars a month and threatens me he’s going to stop paying for my daughter school all the time. He has been very financially comfortable. He is very controlling as well as abusive and this is the reason I never went for child support because I am scared of him. He also wants to claim my daughter for taxes. His wife is also going to be a doctor very soon if she isn’t already. Thank you for you time

A: You are asking a question about New York or PA law, on a Maryland Q&A forum. You should set the geographic area to NY to get a proper answer. That said, I am unaware of any state law that provides for child support after a child reaches the age of 19. You daughter is an adult and is deemed “emancipated” under MD law and in most states that I know of. Adults are supposed to support themselves.
