Elkridge, MD asked in Animal / Dog Law for Ohio

Q: My dog got out of the house and yard today.

my dog got out of my house and ran to the neighbors house who has 3 dogs she likes to play along the fence with. My dog is non aggressive. But does bark at strangers. When she got out I ran straight after her trying to get her. There was a woman walking with her kids and while I was trying to get my dog she was calling for it. I politely asked her to stop because I knew my dog would stand there and bark at them and she is a Great Dane and to children it may be frightening. She continued and then starts coming towards my dog. Interfering with me trying to get her in leash. My dog sniffed at the children and the older of the 2 reached out to pet her and it startled my dog so she barked and did a little jump back. It did scare the boy. And the mother asked him if she had bit him and the boy said no. She checked and he was fine and they continued on. But I get home later to find a business card with a sheriff's number. What can I expect?

A: The sheriff probably wants to serve you a summons. I don’t know for what, exactly. The only way to find out is to call the sheriff. You can hire an attorney to call the sheriff for you if you don’t want to talk to him/her. Or if you do call, DO NOT make any statements to the sheriff. Just politely say you wanted to find out what the sheriff wanted and if all he wants is a statement then tell him you will have your attorney contact him.
