Q: Can I move forward with my daughters braces?

I have final say for all medical related decisions for my kids. My daughter is unhappy with her teeth and wants braces. She has seen two orthodontists and they have told us that braces are optional because her teeth aren’t that bad. But if she wants to fix the spaces she doesn’t like, she can get the braces. My daughter had been begging me to get braces. I told her father how she felt and he said that if I allow her to get braces I will be promoting perfection that will lead to her having more problems and wanting plastic surgery, etc. I completely disagree. If she isn’t happy with her smile, she should fix it to be happy and as a result , more confident. I even told my ex that I would cover the braces cost 100%. He is still giving me a hard time and my daughter is very upset. The orthodontist even feels uncomfortable moving forward because of the stink my ex has made about this. Regardless, I still have final say for medical. Can I move forward with her braces without penalty?

A: Since you have final say for medical and will pick up the total cost then you should be able to move forward.

A: I am going to offer nonlegal advice for a sec. As a kid who had braces, look into any option other than braces like one of those companies that shift teeth with 3d trays.

Now for the legal part, you get to make the medical choices. If your daughter wants braces, get her something less painful that straightens her teeth. If the braces are a status symbol or a fashion statement, dig deeper into that.
