Oklahoma City, OK asked in Criminal Law for Oklahoma

Q: How do i stop an investigation on me?

people i know have told me they've been asked by police about me selling drugs. I believe i may be under investigation for it. I haven't sold drugs but I did have a severe addiction to heroin & allowed various people to enter my life, stay and get high with me for a long time. I'm afraid that because of this, there is a misconception that I'm a drug dealer and not just an addict. However, a couple months ago, i decided to get help and I've been staying clean, attending meetings & working the 12 steps while avoiding those people. I still do have friends from that period in my life, but i don't use with them or have any involvement with drugs. Yet i fear that i may still be under investigation as I've only become aware of this recently since getting clean. What can i do to prevent my life from being turned upside down by police and my past?

A: You cannot necessarily force law enforcement to stop an investigation; however, there are certain strategies that can be employed to best protect you and may cause any investigation into you to dissipate quickly. Also, be mindful that federal law prohibits all law enforcement and prosecutors from using any records of a person receiving or seeking substance abuse treatment against that person in any criminal matter. If you are confident that you are being investigated, the best thing you can do is contact a criminal defense attorney. From there, you and the attorney can develop a plan of action for how to best approach the situation. This is something that is very client-and-fact-specific and not something that can be answered generally on a forum such as this.

Congratulations on getting help and staying clean!
