Secaucus, NJ asked in Landlord - Tenant for Virginia

Q: Landlord says leases is expired during CDC order

My landlord has told me that the CDC order means nothing if my lease expires. He started becoming aggressive after I sent in the CDC paperwork. He also says that he will challenge my income claims in court, even though I claimed less than 100k income when I moved in and I really do not have income right now. I know I am protected under the CDC order, but how do I protect myself from expensive legal representation during these times? He will not renew my lease because I have not been paying my rent so money is tight. Logic tells me to bring in my 2019 tax returns, the CDC paperwork, and attempts from RMRP to contact and pay him for my past due rent to court and I should be okay staying here until roughly February 30? I have no where else to go at the moment.

A: The only way you can protect your rights in a residential lease situation is to pay the rent on time.
