A: You are entitled to retain your own family law attorney to advise you and assist you to calculate exactly what the law says you are entitled to. It is not possible to provide a more specific answer to your question because there are not enough facts. You can retain an attorney to provide you advice and counsel while you handle the divorce papers yourself. Be sure that you have your own INDEPENDENT attorney, not one you share with your husband. Going cheap at this time could cost you a lot of money in the long run, and a lot of people do it and regret it a lot, later. You have to pay for the advice up front but you get it back when you are paid for your half. A property appraisal will be a very important item for you.
