Lawrenceville, GA asked in Divorce for Georgia

Q: My husband and I are agreeing to get a divorce. We have no desire to use attorneys can we divorce on our own?

We have agreed mutually to get a divorce, we have no kids and do not have any desire to get attorneys involved. Are we able to file our own paperwork and make our own divorce settlement arrangement. We get along and have been able to list all of our assets and debts and are in agreement on how to split or determine who is going to get what.

A: You can, but it doesn't always go well. You may miss some important issues that may hurt you later on. Uncontested divorces are not expensive. It is better to spend a little money to have it correctly done by an attorney to save yourself problems later.

A: If it’s uncontested you can certainly try to do it on your own. It may be difficult though and things can be overlooked. If you want to ensure everything is properly handed it’s best to work with an attorney.
