San Francisco, CA asked in Civil Rights, Constitutional Law and Personal Injury for California

Q: I was a victim of Police misconduct, assaulted (battered?)by 6 officers, then wrongfully arrested. Charge were dismissed

I called 911 for mental health reasons after waking up from a coma with severe burns. When the police arrived, they dismissed the ambulance & EMTs and I was assaulted and battered by 6 policemen and wrongfully arrested. They dismissed the charges and county counsel sent me a letter urging me to find a lawyer. I cannot find an attorney to take the case and the Bar association will not even let me pay for a referral. I am now anxious around all law enforcement, and afraid to call 911 for myself or anyone else for any reason. Please if you cannot represent me, help me find an attorney that can. Time is running out!

A: There are many great civil rights lawyers in the San Francisco and Oakland areas. Call the local ACLU office and tell them you need help. They will help you find a good lawyer to help you. Their website is https://www.aclunc.org/about/chapters/san-francisco-chapter, so copy this link and paste it into your browser. You will also find their email address on the same page, in addition to instructions for how to get help online.

It is a rarity to receive the kind of letter you got from county counsel's office, so use that and provide a copy to the ACLU rep you talk to. You can also let them know that you are looking for a private attorney to represent you, because they have contacts with the best civil rights lawyers in that area. Do not delay, but follow through with this asap. And good luck to you.
