Ontario, CA asked in Criminal Law for California

Q: Is there a limitation on the money you stole?

For example, let's say the person robbed but the statute of limitation runs out on the crime. This person is off the hook for legal action but does that mean the person can keep the money they get from the crime? Now, I know if the person can prove the money didn't come from the crime but another source they can keep it but what if they can't prove the money came from another source or what if they use the money to buy a house and can't prove that it came from another source can cops confiscate it to recover the money that was stolen even though they can't prosecute the person because of the statute of limitation for the crime had run out?
