Oakley, CA asked in Contracts and Criminal Law for California

Q: Am I liable for property of ex that he left at my house in CA after I told him that I did not agree to store anything?

My ex left the area for a month and left misc items like hand tools, boxes of random electrical cords and construction supplies at my house. He asked if I would take money to store his things and I refused and gave him plenty of time to remove his things. By texts to which he replied, I specifically stated that I would not be responsible for anything he left and that we did not have any contract, verbal or otherwise and that anything he left at my house would be left at his own risk and that I would dispose of anything as I saw fit. Now he is claiming that I stole his property as I removed everything from my house that belonged to him. Most of it I moved next door to where he will be living with his new girlfriend. I feel that he was given plenty of notice and he had months to remove his things before leaving the state for the last month. Now he's threatening too have me arrested for theft. Am I liable for anything?

A: i would want to hear more info.

however, I do not see how this could be criminal theft.

if he calls the police and they come out to talk to you, I am pretty sure they will say it is a civil matter.
