Q: My mother is keeping my birth certificate and social security card from me, but I'm 18 and moved out. Is this legal?
A: It's not a question of legal the question is do you want to go to court over this? The easiest thing to do is contact Social Security and ask for a replacement (as long as you know the number, it is unlikely that you will actually need to produce the card anywhere). As for the birth certificate contact the office of the town clerk where you were born they can supply a duplicate for a fee of about $10.
