A: Rule 404(b) of the Texas Rules of Evidence says that you can get advance notice if the prosecution intends to use character evidence like prior convictions or bad acts by the defendant to show things like motive, opportunity, intent, absence of mistake, lack of accident, etc.

For example, suppose your name is Steve Jones and the prosecution gives notice that they will introduce evidence that Steven Jones has been busted for meth multiple times. Since you've been warned in advance your defense team will have time to determine if that was really you or just somebody else who happened to also be named Steve Jones.
