Q: Can I legally separate in GA. My husband's infidelity is reason for divorce. I was recently told he now has cancer.
Husband and I are physically separated for 16 months. I excepted him to help me pay off the business bills but to no avail. He informed me after he was exposed of his infidelity of why he put the business in my name. His intentions were to work under the table and collect social security. He refuses to help with the bills when I asked. He offered to pay for the divorce and expects me to go bankrupt. I don't want to go bankrupt. Also I recently found out he has cancer. I don't want to appear cold hearted and I do hope he gets through this but I'm trying to be considerate in spite all he's done to me. So I am seeking a legal separation for now and continue with the divorce but I don't want to be stuck with his bills either. I need to see what steps I need to take to get a separation if that's possible. I did feel out a separation for that needs to be norterized, but is this the route to go? Thank you for your time.
A: You are correct that this is a sad situation. Legal separations are rarely worth the effort. At the end of the day you would still need a divorce. You have mentioned certain specific facts which will mean you should seek legal counsel to discuss your specific situation with someone who can ask you the appropriate questions so as to provide appropriate responses.

A: At this point you should consult with an attorney and move forward with the divorce. This will put things in motion regarding the bills and such. An attorney can review the facts in detail and help you with the proper course of action.
