Covington, LA asked in Criminal Law for Louisiana

Q: How long does the district attorney have when deciding whether or not to "pick-up" criminal charges accusation?

On three separate court dates, I was told the district attorney's office hadn't decided to "pickup charge" yet. I was told this same statement by the magistrate/admin law Judge at each court appearance, being given a later court date after each appearance; however, after the third time, I was not given a new court date. Instead, I was given a notice that if I wasn't contacted by a specific date that I should call to check whether or not the D.A. accepted the charge. That date listed was six months away. That time came and went and I assumed it was over with, then after an additional six more months, (one full year after the criminal accusation made against me). I received a "RUSH" Subpoena commanding me to court the very next morning! It was dated two days prior to my receipt. In addition, a specific courtroom was assigned to me, even though I hadn't been officially charged in magistrate court. At the courthouse, the telepromt sent me to magistrate where I was charged. No explaination

A: Since you have been charged, I recommend that you hire a criminal defense attorney to represent you as well as address the question(s) you have post here. It is better to pay an attorney now that perhaps have a conviction on your record. Good luck.
