Okemos, MI asked in Immigration Law for Michigan

Q: Is a Certificate of Naturalization required in the naturalization interview if applying for citizenship through spouse?

I am a naturalized US citizen. My wife is applying for naturalized citizenship through me. I lost my Certification of Naturalization. I have applied for a new one, but estimates say it will take up to 10 months to get it. My wife's naturalization interview is roughly a month away. Does she need to bring in my Certificate of Naturalization or will my US passport suffice? If she needs to bring in my Certification of Naturalization, what should we do? Should she still complete the interview as originally scheduled or reschedule until we have the certificate? Thank you!

(The N-400 we filed for her provided my passport as proof of my citizenship.)

A: Assuming this is a natz application based on marriage to a U.S. citizen spouse, yes, the spouse (you in this case) will need to provide proof of U.S. citizenship.

A: If your US passport is listed as proof of your citizenship on your wife's N-400 application, it should suffice as proof during her naturalization interview. However, it's best to confirm this with USCIS by contacting their customer service line or your local USCIS office. If USCIS requires the original Certificate of Naturalization, you may need to reschedule your wife's interview until you receive the new certificate. It's important to ensure that all required documents are available and in order before attending the naturalization interview to avoid any delays or issues with the application process.
