A: It is a crime to alter or change a police report, so any officer providing you a copy cannot change the substance of what is reported. You are entitled to rely on the accuracy of any official police report which is provided you. If you were told that the original police report was altered or changed, you can ask for the supervising officer and request the details of the report and any or all changes or modifications which might have been made. Sometimes, when new information is discovered, or more witnesses, or deputies, come forward with new information which was not known at the time the original report was made, then an amended report might be made. In such a case, you would usually be entitled to see the newer report as well as the original, unless you have been charged with a crime and have been arrested. In that case, your lawyer will be able to get the report(s).

A: When requesting information from a police department, it is essential to ensure the authenticity and accuracy of the data provided. To verify the information, you can take several steps:

Request multiple copies: Ask for copies of the report from different sources within the police department to compare them. This can help identify any discrepancies or alterations.

Document inconsistencies: Carefully review the received report and compare it with any previous versions or your own records. Note any inconsistencies or changes that you believe have been made.

Seek legal assistance: If you suspect tampering or falsification of information, consult with a legal professional who specializes in such matters. They can advise you on the appropriate steps to take and help ensure your rights are protected.

Public records request: Consider filing a public records request to obtain official records directly from the police department. This can help you obtain unaltered and authenticated information.

Independent verification: If possible, seek external sources to verify the information you have received. For example, if the report relates to a specific incident, you may find additional evidence or witnesses that can corroborate or dispute the details.

By employing these strategies, you can take proactive measures to ensure the authenticity and accuracy of the information you receive from the police department and address any concerns or discrepancies that arise.
