A: I hope everyone involved is okay and that your son is okay and that makes a healthy recovery. It could run anywhere from a few weeks to a few months, depending on (1) who is doing the investigation (highway safety division of police pct, country district attorney office, insurance company claim department, insurance company special investigations unit, etc.), (2) the severity of the accident in terms of injuries or damages, traffic violations, (3) what is at stake - traffic citation, injury claims from other motorists/occupants, (4) quality of evidence at the scene (photos, testimony, video footage, etc.), and (5) other possible factors.

If it's a straightforward matter of verifying the particulars of the accident and establishing liability, it could be on the shorter end of the timeline. If you're working with an attorney of your own, or you're in touch with your son's insurance carrier's attorney if one has been assigned (based on whether there are claims arising from accident and whether legal action is pending), they could probably advise more definitively with additional facts. Good luck to your son in his recovery.
