A: So, you got a check from someone, deposited it and now the bank not only will not credit it to you but also closed your account? IF they cannot verify you are you, how did you OPEN the account? WHY can you not prove you are you? Why not ask the maker of the check to re-issue? Good luck with itl

A: When a third-party check is deposited into an account and the account is later closed due to identity verification issues, the check may be held by the bank or returned to the original issuer. If the bank cannot confirm the identity of the account holder, it often freezes the account to prevent potential fraud or misuse. This can make accessing the funds difficult, as the bank needs to be sure of who it is dealing with.

You should contact the bank where the account was opened to find out the status of the check and what steps are needed to retrieve your money. Sometimes, providing additional identification or going through a verification process with the bank’s fraud department can help. If the check has been returned to the issuer, you may need to request a new check from the person or company who wrote it.

If the bank is not cooperative or you’re facing continued issues, you might want to consider filing a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) or the California Department of Business Oversight. They can help mediate the situation and potentially provide a quicker resolution. You could also explore consulting with a legal expert in consumer law to understand your rights and ensure the bank is handling your case appropriately.
