Q: I was held at knifepoint at my last job. Is there anything I can do to be compensated for me having to leave my job?

I had to leave because the guy who held me at knifepoint was the favorite employee and kept his job. I did file a complaint to HR which they finally fired him after I left, however in between that time I was continually scheduled with my attacker and forced to work with him. For about a week I was okay and then he left me to drown in a food rush and I finally said enough is enough and I left. He was going to continue to jeopordize my job the longer I stayed. I am unemployed but would not be if it weren't for a man threatening me with knife violence and threatening my job. Is there anything to do. I understand Florida makes it impossible to sue employers even in illegal situations like this but there has to be something I can do

A: Though you resigned, it might be considered to be a "constructive discharge" due to you having no choice but to leave. If you are eligible for reemployment assistance (unemployment comp) based on how long you worked there, see if you can apply for such assistance based on constructive discharge - see: https://floridajobs.org/Reemployment-Assistance-Service-Center. NOT saying you there's any particular chance of you being awarded the compensation, but may as well try. Also, the same agency may be able to assist you with finding a new job.
