Springfield, MO asked in Animal / Dog Law for Missouri

Q: I took a dog in from someone 5 months ago, now the original owner wants her back. Is this dog considered mine?

I took the dog in after the previous owner was found to have locked themselves in a bathroom for the past week+, the house had no power, and the dog had been left to fend for herself in the house. The previous owner was taken into a hospital for a short period of time (less than a week). No food or water was prepared for the dog and there was dog feces all over the house. We have cared for her since then, and after asking for the previous owner to give me vaccination records, they say they want the dog back. The previous owner made no attempts to retrieve the dog or contact me up until I sent a certified letter in the mail to obtain said records. The dog has become a part of our family and I am trying to figure out if there’s anything I can do to keep her from going to a bad home and instead stay with us.
