Q: What are the legal and financial ramifications to not paying the lease vs taking on debt to pay $12000 to break lease
My daughter is a student and signed a lease far too early last year due to pressure from the building and promises of a lower rate which we did not even get. She then made other arrangements for housing this year and we filled out a lease tranfer for her first apartment. We were under the impression she had sublet the first apartment since the lease transfer fee was paid and the form signed. Apparently that is not the case and she is still under the first lease as well as the lease she has for the apartment she is living in. They are asking about $12,000 to break the first lease. Her dad and I both had to sign the lease for the first apartment and the lease transfer form. I am not sure that the person she sublet ghosted her or if she is being less than forthcoming about the sublease.
