Q: Can you force a minor to file a restraining order

My girlfriend’s mom is trying to force my girlfriend to file a protection order against me because I snuck over to her house with my girlfriend’s consent. We are both minors. I don’t know if she can do this especially because I did nothing wrong.

A: A parent can generally file for a protection order on behalf of their child. The child doesn't have to consent to the parent filing on their behalf. The Court can grant the protection order over the child's objection if the Court believes that the protection order is in the child's best interests and the the protection order request otherwise meets the requirements for a protection order. There isn't enough information in your question to help determine whether it meets those requirements or not.

A protection order on your record will often show on a background check and can make you ineligible for certain types of employment or opportunities. It may be time to put your future first and avoid these people and this situation before it escalates.
