Q: Can a medical provider bait me in for treatment with a low out of pocket quote and then bill me ten times the difference
I am disabled. I take 26 med daily and chemotherapy once per week. So my income is limited. About a year ago, my doctor wanted me to try a new infusion medication. I called the infusion center and gave them my insurance. I asked what my out of pocket costs would be per monthly treatment. Because I'm on a fixed income. They quoted me $100 per monthly session. So I scheduled my treatments. After my second treatment I received two bills for $995 each. I called about the billing error and they admitted their system and clerk had placed the decimal point in the wrong location. I told them I can't afford that and I would have never agreed to that out of pocket had I known because all of my monthly income goes towards medical care. They said since I received the medication, it's my responsibility. I filed a grievance with Medicare and they admitted their error to them as well. But they still refuse to remedy it. It's recently been turned over to collections. Do I have any recourse?
