A: That sounds like an incredibly difficult situation, and you have every right to seek justice for what happened. If you believe the law firm that was responsible for your grandmother’s guardianship mishandled her finances or neglected her rights, you can report them to your state’s bar association. Every state has a disciplinary board that oversees attorneys and law firms, and they take complaints about misconduct seriously.

You may also want to file a complaint with the probate court that appointed the guardianship. Courts have the authority to review cases where a guardian or conservator may have abused their power or failed in their duties. If there was financial exploitation, you could report the matter to your state’s adult protective services or law enforcement, as elder financial abuse is a serious offense.

If your grandmother had life insurance that was wrongfully ignored or mishandled, you might be able to take legal action to recover what was lost. Gathering evidence, such as financial records, emails, or court documents, can help support your case. Speaking with another attorney who handles guardianship disputes or elder law issues could give you more clarity on your options moving forward.
